Picking the Right Fence for a Gulf Coast Yard
Sarasota yards ask a lot of a fence. A home a few blocks from the bay sits in salty, damp air. A lot in Lakewood Ranch or Palmer Ranch usually comes with an HOA rulebook. A canal home in North Port or Venice wants the water view kept open. We start with what the fence has to do, then match the material to the yard:
- Aluminum is our most-requested fence on the coast. It won't rust, it passes pool code easily and it keeps views open.
- Vinyl is the go-to for full backyard privacy. It doesn't rot, swell or need paint, and salt doesn't bother it.
- Wood costs the least for a 6 ft privacy fence and suits inland yards where a natural look matters.
- Chain link is the value pick for long back lines, dog runs and acreage east of I-75.
Plenty of our jobs mix two materials: vinyl along the neighbors for privacy and aluminum across the back to keep the pond, golf course or canal in view. Compare the two most popular choices in our aluminum vs. vinyl guide.
Fence Materials Compared for Sarasota Conditions

| Typical cost per foot | About $20–$60 | About $25–$60 | About $16–$45 | About $10–$20 |
| Privacy | Open, see-through | Full with solid panels | Full with board-on-board | Open (slats optional) |
| Salt air near the water | Excellent, no rust | Excellent, nothing to corrode but hardware | Fair, needs sealing | Good if vinyl-coated |

What We Cover at Your Free Estimate
A fence price over the phone is a guess. We would rather see the yard. Most visits take under an hour, and you'll leave with a real number:
- Every run measured, with corners, gates, slopes, tree roots and drainage swales noted.
- Your survey checked for property lines and drainage or utility easements before we plan a single post.
- Jurisdiction confirmed. A Sarasota mailing address can mean the City of Sarasota, unincorporated Sarasota County or even Manatee County. Each has different rules.
- HOA rules reviewed if your neighborhood has an architectural committee.
- Samples on hand for colors, picket styles, post caps and gate hardware.
Your written quote spells out materials, gates, removal of the old fence, any permit and cleanup, so comparing bids is easy.
How Much Does a Fence Cost in Sarasota?
Typical installed prices per linear foot. Height, gates, tear-out and site conditions move your number.
Ranges are typical installed prices drawn from published Sarasota and Florida cost data. Your free on-site estimate turns them into one written number. More detail in our Sarasota fence cost guide.
What Pushes a Sarasota Fence Quote Up or Down
Two quotes for the same street can land far apart. Here is where the money goes:
- Linear feet. Everything is priced per foot, so a deep lot or a corner lot costs more than a compact one.
- Height and grade. A 6 ft privacy panel uses more material than a 4 ft pool fence, and heavier aluminum or thicker vinyl costs more per foot.
- Gates. Each walk gate adds cost; double drive gates and self-closing pool gates add the most.
- Tear-out. Pulling an old fence means digging out concrete footings and hauling debris. We list it as its own line.
- Coastal hardware. Stainless or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners cost a little more and are worth it near the water.
- Ground conditions. Roots, shell fill, a high water table after summer rain and tight side yards all add labor.
- Permits. Some jobs need none, others need a building or zoning permit. We tell you which before you sign.

Built With Hurricane Season in Mind
Sarasota knows storms. Hurricane Milton came ashore near Siesta Key in October 2024 as a Category 3, and two years earlier Hurricane Ian's rain pushed the Myakka River into North Port and Venice-area neighborhoods. No fence is storm-proof, but the way it's built decides what's still standing:
- Deep, concreted posts. Our sandy flatwoods soil holds a lot of water in the rainy season, so footings are sized for the fence height and wind exposure.
- Reinforced gate and corner posts. They carry the most load, so they get the most support.
- Spacing to spec. Post spacing follows the panel manufacturer's instructions, not the fastest way to finish.
- Open designs where it's windy. Aluminum and chain link let wind pass through, which helps on exposed waterfront lots.
If a storm does take out a section, our fence repair team can document the damage and give you a written estimate for your insurance claim.
Permits, HOAs and Property Lines, Handled
Which office reviews your fence
Permits around here depend on exactly where the house sits. In unincorporated Sarasota County, residential wood, vinyl and chain link fences that meet the zoning code don't need a building permit, but aluminum fences and walls do. The City of Sarasota caps fences at 6.5 ft in front, side and rear setbacks. North Port doesn't require a building permit for fences 6 ft or shorter on one- and two-family lots. Bradenton requires a zoning permit for fences, and Manatee County generally requires a building permit. We check your address and file whatever is required.
Height and placement
In the county, a street-side fence set back less than 4 ft can be no taller than 4 ft, and side and rear fences can reach 8 ft. Chain link isn't allowed in a required front yard, and the finished side of any fence faces the street and the neighbors. We lay out every fence to these rules before we dig. Details in our Sarasota fence permit guide.
HOA approval
Lakewood Ranch, Palmer Ranch and many gated communities have architectural review before any fence goes in. We give you the product sheet, color, height and a layout sketch for your application so it goes in complete the first time.
Utility lines and easements
Before any digging, underground lines are marked through Sunshine 811, which Florida law requires at least two full business days ahead. We also plan around drainage and utility easements shown on your survey.
Pool Fences Built to Florida Law
A lot of Sarasota homes have a pool, and Florida's pool barrier law (F.S. 515.29) is specific about the fence around it:
- At least 4 ft high measured on the outside.
- No gaps a young child could crawl under, squeeze through or climb over.
- Gates that open outward, away from the pool, and close and latch on their own, with the release on the pool side out of a child's reach.
- Placed around the pool and far enough from the water's edge that a child who gets through can't fall straight in.
Aluminum is the usual choice because it meets the spacing rules and keeps the pool visible from the house. Vinyl works when you want privacy around the deck. In unincorporated Sarasota County an aluminum pool fence needs a building permit, which we handle. Read the full Sarasota pool fence guide.

Fencing Across Sarasota and Manatee, Area by Area
What makes sense for a fence changes a lot between the barrier islands and the ranchland east of I-75:
- Lakewood Ranch: spans two counties, so the permit office depends on which side of the county line you're on, and HOA review comes first.
- Palmer Ranch: a large planned community between Clark Road and Osprey with neighborhood architectural rules and lots of pool homes.
- Siesta Key and Longboat Key: salt spray, wind and tight lots favor aluminum and vinyl with stainless hardware.
- Venice and Nokomis: a mix of city and county jurisdiction, older bungalows and newer gated neighborhoods.
- North Port: big lots and canals, where long chain link and aluminum runs are common and fences up to 6 ft skip the building permit.
- Fruitville: larger inland lots east of the city near the Celery Fields.
We also work in Osprey, Englewood and Bradenton. See every service area.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a new fence cost in Sarasota?
Typical installed prices run about $10–$20 per foot for chain link, $16–$45 for wood privacy, $25–$60 for vinyl privacy and $20–$60 for aluminum. Most backyard projects land in the low-to-mid thousands. See the cost guide, or get an exact written price at your free estimate.
Do I need a permit for a fence in Sarasota?
It depends on where you live. Unincorporated Sarasota County doesn't require a building permit for residential wood, vinyl or chain link fences that meet zoning, but aluminum fences and walls need one. The City of Sarasota, Bradenton and Manatee County have their own rules. We check and file what's needed. More in our permit guide.
How tall can my fence be?
In unincorporated Sarasota County, side and rear fences can be up to 8 ft, and street-side fences set back less than 4 ft are limited to 4 ft. The City of Sarasota caps fences at 6.5 ft. North Port limits front yards to 4 ft. We confirm the limit for your lot at the estimate.
What fence holds up best to salt air?
Aluminum and vinyl. Neither rusts or rots, so the main concern is the hardware. Near the water we use stainless or hot-dipped galvanized screws, hinges and latches, which is what FEMA's coastal construction guidance recommends.
What's the best fence for a pool?
A 4 ft or taller aluminum fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate is the most common choice. It meets Florida's barrier law and keeps the pool in sight. See our pool fence guide.
Will my HOA approve the fence?
Most associations approve aluminum and vinyl in set colors and heights. We review your community's guidelines with you and prepare the specs and layout sketch your committee asks for.
How long does installation take?
Most residential fences go in over one to three days. HOA approval and any permit review usually take longer than the build itself, so we start that paperwork right away.
Can you work around a canal, lake or preserve behind my house?
Yes. We work from your survey, keep the fence out of easements, and usually suggest open aluminum on the water side so you keep the view.
Do you remove my old fence?
Yes. On replacement jobs we pull the old panels, posts and concrete footings and haul everything away. It's listed separately on your quote.
Do you call 811 before digging?
Yes. Florida law requires a Sunshine 811 locate at least two full business days before digging, and we schedule it on every job.
Can you fix storm damage?
Yes. We reset leaning posts, replace broken panels and boards, and rebuild sections. We can also give you a written estimate for an insurance claim. See fence repair.
Are estimates really free?
Yes. The on-site visit and written quote cost nothing, and there's no obligation.
