Where Chain Link Makes Sense

Chain link fits plenty of Sarasota-area properties, especially the larger lots in North Port, Fruitville and out toward Myakka where hundreds of feet of vinyl or aluminum would get expensive:

  • Big lots and acreage: the lowest cost per foot by a wide margin.
  • Dogs: 4–6 ft chain link keeps most dogs home.
  • Back and side lines where privacy isn't the goal.
  • Permit-free in most of the county: residential chain link that meets zoning needs no building permit in unincorporated Sarasota County.

One limit to know: Sarasota County doesn't allow chain link in a required front yard or any required yard facing a public street. We lay out your fence so those sections use another material.

Choosing Your Chain Link Fence

Height

Four feet is standard for yards. Go to 5 or 6 ft for jumpers and larger dogs. County rules allow up to 8 ft on side and rear lines.

Wire gauge

Lower gauge numbers mean thicker wire. Heavier mesh resists dogs, mowers and storm debris better.

Coating

Plain galvanized steel relies on its zinc coating, which slowly wears in humid and salty air. Vinyl-coated mesh adds a bonded layer over the zinc and comes with color-matched posts. For most homes, and anywhere near the water, black vinyl-coated is worth the small step up.

Gates

Walk gates for everyday use, and single or double drive gates wide enough for a boat trailer, RV or tractor. See gate installation.

Front-yard sections

Because chain link can't go in a required county front yard, we often finish the street side in 4 ft black aluminum or vinyl picket and run chain link down the sides and across the back. It keeps the overall cost low and the curb view tidy.

The process

How We Install Chain Link

Fast, tidy and built to stay tight.

Measure and mark

We measure the line, mark gates and check the survey for property lines and easements.

Locates and posts

After the Sunshine 811 locate, terminal and line posts go into concrete footings.

Rail, mesh and gates

Top rail goes on, mesh is stretched tight and tied, and gates are hung and adjusted.

How Chain Link Compares

  • Versus aluminum: both are open and low-maintenance. Aluminum looks dressier and is the usual pool fence; chain link wins on price for long runs.
  • Versus vinyl: vinyl gives full privacy at several times the price. Many homes put vinyl near the house and chain link along the back.
  • Versus wood: chain link won't rot or need stain but gives no privacy without slats.

See all four side by side on our homepage comparison or in the fence cost guide. Chain link can also serve as a pool barrier if the mesh is small enough to keep little climbers out; our pool fence guide explains the rules.

Gates for Trailers, Boats and Equipment

A lot of our chain link work east of I-75 and in North Port includes a wide drive gate for a boat, RV, trailer or tractor. We size the opening to what has to fit through, set heavier gate posts in deeper footings and add a drop rod with a ground sleeve to hold the inactive leaf.

Need a fix rather than a new fence? We also re-stretch sagging mesh and replace bent top rails. See fence repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is chain link the cheapest fence?

For most residential jobs, yes. Galvanized chain link has the lowest installed cost per foot.

Can chain link go in my front yard in Sarasota County?

Not in a required front yard or a required yard facing a public street in unincorporated Sarasota County. We use aluminum or picket for those sections.

Do I need a permit for chain link?

Not in unincorporated Sarasota County if it meets zoning. City and Manatee County rules differ. See the permit guide.

How long does chain link last here?

Galvanized chain link commonly lasts 15–20 years or more. Vinyl-coated mesh adds corrosion protection for humid and coastal yards.

Can I add privacy later?

Yes. Privacy slats or windscreen fabric can be added, though neither matches a solid vinyl or wood fence.

Will chain link keep my dog in?

For most dogs, yes. For diggers we can add a bottom tension wire or bury a strip of mesh.

How tall can a chain link fence be?

In unincorporated Sarasota County, side and rear fences can go up to 8 ft. Most homes use 4 ft, or 5–6 ft for larger dogs.
