Aluminum Fence Installation in Sarasota, FL
Aluminum is the fence the Gulf Coast was made for. It looks like wrought iron, never rusts, keeps your water or golf view wide open and is the simplest way to build a code-ready pool barrier.

Why Aluminum Works So Well Near the Bay
Steel and iron fences rust fast in salty air. Aluminum forms its own protective oxide layer, and a baked-on powder coat adds a second barrier, so a quality aluminum fence still looks sharp after years of sea breezes. FEMA's coastal construction guidance notes metal corrosion is worst within about 3,000 feet of the ocean, which describes a lot of Siesta Key, Longboat Key and west-of-the-Trail Sarasota.
- Open views: pickets don't block the canal, lake, preserve or fairway behind you.
- Wind passes through: an open fence catches far less wind than a solid panel during a storm.
- Low upkeep: a rinse with the hose a few times a year keeps salt film off.
- HOA-friendly: black aluminum is the standard approved rear-yard fence in many communities.

Height and grade drive the price more than anything else.

Choosing Your Aluminum Fence
Height
Pool barriers have to be at least 4 ft on the outside, so 4 ft and 5 ft are the common heights around pools. For a back yard where a big dog needs containing, 5 ft or 6 ft is better. Street-side sections in unincorporated Sarasota County are limited to 4 ft when set back less than 4 ft from the line, so front-yard fences usually stay at 4 ft.
Grade
Aluminum comes in residential, heavy residential and commercial weights. Heavier rails and thicker pickets resist dents from mowers, kids and dogs leaning on them. For pool fences and exposed waterfront lots we usually recommend at least heavy residential.
Color
Black is the most popular because it disappears against landscaping. Bronze suits mangroves, tile roofs and Mediterranean-style homes. White shows up more but matches some Old Florida cottages. Check your HOA's approved list first, which we do with you at the estimate.
Pet and pool spacing
Pool code requires openings small enough that a young child can't squeeze through. Puppy panels with extra pickets at the bottom keep small dogs in on non-pool runs too.
How We Install an Aluminum Fence
What happens between your estimate and a finished fence.
Layout and survey check
We stake the line from your survey, keeping clear of easements and any sight-visibility area at the street.
Permit and HOA
Aluminum needs a building permit in unincorporated Sarasota County, and pool barriers are inspected. We file it and prepare your HOA packet.
Set posts, hang sections
Posts go in concrete, sections are racked to follow the grade, and gates get self-closing hinges and magnetic latches where needed.
Aluminum on Canal, Lake and Golf Course Lots
Much of the Sarasota area backs onto water: Venice and North Port canals, Lakewood Ranch and Palmer Ranch lakes and retention ponds, and fairways in golf communities. A solid fence along those lines would hide the reason you bought the lot, and many associations don't allow it. Aluminum gives you a defined, pet-safe yard without blocking anything.
- Survey first. Waterfront lots often have drainage or maintenance easements along the rear line. We plan the fence around them.
- Soft ground. Lots near water can stay wet after summer rain, so we size footings with that in mind.
- Mixed layouts. A common plan is vinyl privacy along both neighbors and aluminum across the back.
- A rear gate. Handy for reaching the dock, seawall or shoreline for maintenance.

Pool Gates Done Right
The gate is where most pool barriers fail inspection. Florida law says pool gates must open outward away from the pool, close on their own and latch on their own, with the release on the pool side where a small child can't reach it. We use adjustable self-closing hinges and magnetic latches, then test the swing from several angles before we leave.
We also check that nothing permanent, like an AC unit or planter wall, sits close enough outside the fence for a child to climb over. Full details in our Sarasota pool fence guide, and more gate options on our gate page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does aluminum fencing rust near the beach?
No. Aluminum doesn't rust the way steel does, and a quality powder coat protects the finish. The hardware is what to watch, so we use stainless or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners on coastal jobs.
Do I need a permit for an aluminum fence in Sarasota County?
In unincorporated Sarasota County, yes. The county exempts wood, vinyl and chain link fences from a building permit, but other fences, including aluminum, need one. City and Manatee County rules differ. We handle it either way. See the permit guide.
Is aluminum good for a pool fence?
It's the most common pool barrier material here because it meets Florida's height and spacing requirements and keeps the pool visible from inside the house.
Will an aluminum fence keep my dog in?
For most dogs, yes. For small breeds we add puppy panels with closer pickets along the bottom.
How long does an aluminum fence last?
With a good powder coat and decent hardware it typically lasts decades with almost no upkeep. Rinsing salt film off occasionally helps the finish.
Can aluminum follow a sloped yard?
Yes. Many aluminum sections can be racked to follow gentle grade changes so there's no big gap underneath, which matters for pool code.
What colors are available?
Black is most popular, followed by bronze and white. We bring samples and check them against your HOA's approved list.
