Aluminum vs. Vinyl Fence in Sarasota: Which Should You Choose?
The two fences we install most on the Gulf Coast, compared side by side.
The Short Answer
Choose aluminum for a pool barrier, a canal, lake or golf view, a front yard, or any spot exposed to wind. Choose vinyl when privacy is the goal: blocking neighbors, screening a patio or hiding the street. Many Sarasota homes use both.

Side by Side
| Aluminum | Vinyl | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cost per foot | About $20–$60 | About $25–$60 |
| Privacy | None, see-through | Full with solid panels |
| Salt air | Won't rust; hardware matters | Unaffected; hardware matters |
| Wind | Air passes through | Solid panels catch wind |
| Upkeep | Occasional rinse | Wash off mildew in shade |
| Pool barrier | Ideal | Works if built non-climbable |
| County building permit | Required | Not required if zoning is met |
Salt Air
FEMA's coastal guidance says metal corrosion is most pronounced within about 3,000 ft of the ocean. Neither aluminum nor vinyl rusts, so what fails near the water is cheap steel hardware. We use stainless or hot-dipped galvanized parts on both.
Storms
When Milton came ashore near Siesta Key in 2024, open fences shed wind that solid panels had to fight. If your lot is exposed, aluminum or a vinyl fence with a lattice top and tighter post spacing is the safer bet.
Cost Over Time
Per foot, the two overlap: about $20–$60 for aluminum and $25–$60 for vinyl, depending on height and grade. Over the years, both need little more than an occasional rinse, so the long-run cost mostly comes down to hardware and installation quality.
Installation Differences
Aluminum sections can be racked to follow gentle slopes, which keeps the gap under a pool fence small. Vinyl panels are stepped down a slope instead, leaving small triangles at the bottom we fill or minimize. Vinyl's solid panels need tighter post spacing and reinforcement on windy lots; aluminum needs heavier gate posts on wide openings. Both go in concrete footings, and both are typically installed in one to three days for a backyard.
Pets and Kids
Vinyl's solid panels stop dogs from seeing (and barking at) everything that walks by. Aluminum can get puppy panels at the bottom to keep small dogs in. For a pool, aluminum's see-through design lets you watch the water from the house.
HOA Approval
Many planned communities in Lakewood Ranch, Palmer Ranch and elsewhere approve both, often in set colors, and many require open aluminum on lake, preserve or golf frontage. We check your guidelines before you choose.
Permits
In unincorporated Sarasota County, vinyl that meets zoning needs no building permit; aluminum does. We handle either, but it can add a little time to an aluminum job. Details in our permit guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which lasts longer, aluminum or vinyl?
Both commonly last decades in Florida with little upkeep. Hardware quality and installation matter more than the material.
Is vinyl strong enough for a hurricane?
No fence is storm-proof, but vinyl with deep concrete footings, reinforced rails and correct post spacing holds up well. On exposed lots, a lattice top lets some wind through.
Can I mix aluminum and vinyl?
Yes, and it's common: vinyl privacy along neighbors, aluminum across the water or pool side.
Which is better for a windy waterfront lot?
Aluminum. Wind passes through the pickets instead of loading a solid panel, and it won't rust in salt air.
Which do HOAs prefer?
Most local associations approve both in set colors. Many require open aluminum on lake and golf frontage.
